How the Standings Would Look With the 3-Point System

LogosThere have been recent musings in the Twitter-verse suggesting the possibility of the NHL implementing the 3-point system in the near future. The system, which would grant three points for a regulation win and two points for an overtime win, has slowly been gaining traction over the last couple years. The issue many hope to solve is the abundance of 3-point games and teams who desire merely to make it to overtime rather than strive for that winning goal in the dying minutes. Doling out three points for a regulation victory was a suggestion among many others, though lately the league has been warming up to the European system and all but ignoring the other ideas. The system would almost surely see teams working extra hard to end that tie and avoid overtime. The entire dynamic of the third period changes, as teams would sacrifice their defensive traps and focus more diligently on the three points looming ahead of them. Adjusting a point system is a major change for a league to undergo, but one that seams to make a glaring amount of sense from a lot of angles.

Some Interesting Stats Thus Far

There have only been 26 games thus far in the young 2012/2013 NHL season, but all ready the league has come back with a bang. Thanks to the crammed schedule, the past three days have provided a plethora of highlight reel goals, saves and plays that have managed to hush lockout critics and excite fans once more. I’ve no doubt Bettman and Fehr are laughing while swishing their brandy and clipping their cigars as the excitement and mirth among fans have cast a daunting shadow over those who still hold a grudge toward the NHL. But no matter where you stand, it’s hard to deny the NHL’s flashy return. Here are some interesting stats:

Hockey Hockey Hockey! Eastern Conference Predictions

Kessel-PlumsI had become content with no hockey. In fact, Christmas came early with news on the Blue Jays, which filled the void while visions of Kessel danced in my head. The anticipation for the World Juniors was more exciting than ever, with no NHL to compete with. You see, I was livid. It was like losing a best friend who I only get to see nine months out of the year anyway. I felt betrayed, and shared every other emotion the myriad angry fans displayed. As the days passed, losing my friend was no longer difficult to cope with. I was sure I wouldn’t even care if the lockout ended. But then it did. And I’d be lying to you if I denied staying up until quarter-after-five when the announcement  was made. Ever since then I’ve been playing catch-up with all the news and transactions from last year, and I’ve had a hell of a time in doing so. Anyway, I believe I have a decent grasp on the dynamics of the Eastern Conference. Here are my brief predictions:

Top Ten Movies I Look Forward to Seeing in 2013

James Tweet

James was right. No hockey equals winter boredom. I replaced my first love with my second: movies. Glorious, fantastical movies. However, unless you live under a rock, nay, a mountain, you probably heard the lockout has reached a tentative agreement. But that won’t stop me from talking about movies. You see, I’m still mad at hockey. Hockey broke up with me and it took several months to recover. Now that it’s back, I can’t just dive back in head first, or I’ll seem desperate (Who am I kidding, I’m desperate). Anyway, here’s what 2013′s got cookin’, plus a few honourable mentions.

Top Ten Movies of 2012

When I looked back at all the movies released in 2012, I was surprised at how many I’d actually seen. After perusing the list I compiled, it dawned upon me that 2012 offered an abundance of top-caliber films, especially in comparison to years of yore. I can’t remember looking forward to so many movies in the previous 21 years of my life. Of course, there were still a few flicks that made me regret spending my 12 dollars, which, on the other hand, made me glad I didn’t waste my precious scene points. The two hours I spent watching Snow White and the Huntsmen would have been better spent re-alphabetizing my book shelf. The Campaign was an abysmal waste of time and The Amazing Spiderman was just The Mediocre Spiderman. However, it’s not the flops I’m worried about today. It’s the cinematic adventures that immersed me into their universes with their wonderfully spun tales and dashing unprecedented action. Here is my top ten movies of 2012

A Little Talent of Mine

Remember that video of Alyssa who can say words backwards? I was stunned because I had no idea other people shared the same hobby. Saying words backwards (that is, more like reading them backwards) is something I’ve done since I was twelve. Seeing people enjoy her video made me want to make a video as well. Except, competitiveness being a major part of my nature, I made one with a twist. My pal James Wattie compiled four lists of 15 words using a random word generator. These lists and the words they contained were entirely unknown to me. The object was to see how fast I could say them backwards. This video was my fourth try (the last list), and also my best time. Here it is:
